I just posted this to my.nameis.me.
My name is brian botkiller. I am a musician and multimedia professional. I have been active on the internet for over fifteen years, and in all that time, I have done so under a pseudonym.
I believe that a pseudonym is essential to one’s life on the internet. I do not believe that a pseudonym undoes one’s creative work or the viability of that work. I believe that to question this, is to question the viability of the internet as a delivery system for art in all its forms.
Why do I use a pseudonym? In the beginnings of the internet, using a pseudonym was commonplace, because it allowed one to escape the everyday life. As time has progressed, however, it has lent to how one presents their work on the internet. In my case, as a musician who has found success with his work, I have no interest in sharing my “real name” with the internet. In addition, I don’t personally feel connected to my real name, for reasons which I don’t feel I need to share to make my point here. Needless to say, I feel that my name, the name I use professionally, IS my name. I made it. I grew it from nothing, and it has become something which thousands of people know me by. For that reason, my name truly is my name.
I believe that this stance is true, because it is my expression, of me, and no one will convince me otherwise.
