Tomorrow (weds), I am doing a DJ set with Burlesque Noir for their “NY meets NM” showdown show. Sure to be good fun! At Low Spirits bar (2823 2nd st. NW, Albuquerque, NM), $10 @ door, 21+, doors @ 8pm, I’ll be DJing big beat and 8bit tunes, then playing for BN’s set, then DJing a bit more! Please come out!

My CD is FINALLY DONE!

It’s been about ten years, tons of various releases, and now I’m finally doing a CD release.

It’s a CDr, yes… but I don’t personally want to release a full-on silverback CD right now.

The CD is nine tracks:

wake up call (unreleased via the net or anything else save for some live versions)

renovate (new, never heard unless you’ve seen me live recently)

Slick Idiot 6/1/10 show review

What a fucking sick show. The turnout was great (especially for a tuesday night in ABQ), with over 70 diehards coming out to make it happen. Slick Idiot killed it, despite the band being a little beat up thanks to health issues and such. A real pleasure to meet En Esch in person finally, I only wish I had a copy of my CD with the song we did together to give to him. I got into a few mosh pits, and got to beat myself up to “Godlike” and “A drug against war”. Reminded myself I’m human as I slammed against others and yelled lyrics at the top of my lungs. Had a great time opening with Vertigo Venus for the show, got to hear my new drumkit mic’d up and love love loved it.

Thank you to the Launchpad and Slick Idiot, you guys rock, and I hope we do it again soon.

Thoughts on internet marketing for your band

I’ve been using social networking hard for over eight years to promote my shows. I had a myspace profile before myspace was myspace, and had it turned into a music profile the second I could do so. Social networking has always been a part of promoting my music.

I make heavy usage of Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and Youtube promoting my band, Vertigo Venus, and my solo project, brian botkiller, and it works. I create a Facebook event for all my shows, and I invite people based on the region/area the show is going down in. I keep facebook lists that sort my friends out based on their location, and send event invites to them.

I push hard on twitter, announcing the show, and talking to others about it. You HAVE to interact! Don’t just talk AT people. Talk WITH people. Ask them if they come to shows often, why they do, thank them for coming. Make fans and friends, not just connections. The key is to interact.

Myspace is still great for booking shows and promoting; it has lost much of its steam, but you can’t ignore it, not if you’re a serious musician.

Doing vlogs on Youtube is very important, too, to talk about your shows and engage your fans. Do giveaways and announcements via Youtube, and ask fans to interact with you.

And, keep a band blog, talk about what’s going on, what you’re doing, and THANK YOUR FANS! They’re the reason you’re getting known and getting people at your shows.

That’s just some thoughts. Hope you like them.

Red Elvises w/Vertigo Venus @ Corazon 5/17 review

Red Elvises w/ Vertigo Venus, 5/17 @ Corazon (Santa Fe, NM)

Having never seen the Red Elvises, (which is sad, considering how often they make their way through Albuquerque), I was pretty psyched to get to finally catch a set by them (much less open for them!) I wasn’t let down in any way shape or form, that’s for damn sure. The last time a band got me this jazzed up was The Gluey Brothers reunion at Launchpad in December of ’09, and before that, I can’t even remember. I’ve rarely seen a band with this kind of energy and awesome skill on a stage at once. Igor’s one of the finest frontmen you could ask for, with a distinct ability to control a crowd. Oleg’s giant bass is actually outshined by his giant smile he flashes constantly while playing. Milka, on backup guitar/vocals, had a voice that you would never have expected to come out of her frame – like Tom Waits mashed up with an army of gospel singers, this girl delivered. Elena on keyboards was officially one of the most awesome keyboard players I’ve ever seen, with so much energy it almost hurt, I have no idea how she was able to do what she did in high heels. Finally, Kyle on drums held it down like a fucking metronome, and his drum solo was by far one of the most expressive and original I’ve ever seen.

In the two (yes, two) sets that the band played, they did everything from “Your love is better than Cocaine”, to “I wanna see you Bellydance”, and even the most amazing cover of Chris Iasaak’s “Wicked Game” I’ve ever heard.

I can’t wait to see this band again, they’re obviously hardworking and deserve all the success they’ve had. My only regret of the night? Forgetting my “Six String Samurai” movie poster to have the band sign

I should also make a mention of Corazon, which is officially one of my favorite venues in New Mexico. Mikey Baker is a man who knows how to run a quality space, with great staff and sound. This is a great club that I hope has much success.

I do understand that they’ll be back in September, though, so when they are, I urge you to see this band.

Hey all, my band, Vertigo Venus, has got a TON of great shows coming up, and we hope to see you out!

Firstly, we’re opening for the RED ELVISES at Corazon in Santa Fe, NM on May 17th:

This is sure to be an AWESOME show!

Next up, we’ve got a great gig in Santa Fe again, at Warehouse 21 – ALL AGES and FREE!

We follow that up with a REALLY IMPORTANT GIG. On May 26th, we’re playing an instore appearance at Hot Topic at the Coronado mall in Albuquerque. yeah, that’s right.

So here’s the deal. We need as many people as we can get at this gig. Why? Because if we can show HT management that we kick ass (which we do), they’ll sell our new CD. That means a lot of good things for us.

so, what we need YOU to do is show up at 5:30pm to Hot Topic in Coronado mall, ready to rock. Bring EVERY FRIEND YOU HAVE with you! PLEASE! I know we ask a lot of you, but this is REALLY important!

In 2008, we worked harder than we ever had before in Albuquerque, and we were rewarded with BEST PUNK BAND, drummer, singer, bassist, guitarist, and best theatrical production.
